Eden Square welcomes new tenant Aldi confirmed as phase two anchor retailer.

National premium discount supermarket Aldi is taking 16,000 sq ft premises in phase two of Eden Square development in Urmston town centre. Work on site is expected to commence in summer.

The announcement follows Trafford Council’s approval of the revised phase two plans in October 2010, which provides three larger units aimed at retailers who could not be accommodated in phase one.

Leon Guyett, development director at Ask Developments, said: “We have been in dialogue with Aldi for some time and have worked together to adapt the plans in order to accommodate the supermarket into the scheme. The introduction of Aldi is a fantastic addition both to Eden Square and to the wider shopping offer in Urmston.”

An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are pleased to announce the plans for a new store in Urmston as part of our ongoing expansion plans within the UK. We will be looking to create several positions within the store and will begin a local recruitment campaign as the opening date nears.”

Two of the remaining three larger units are in advanced stages of negotiation, and the significant progress made on phase two of the multi-million pound development has encouraged renewed interest in phase one.

The addition of Aldi adds significant weight to Urmston as a retail destination and will complement those shopping facilities already operating in phase one, which include a mix of local and national retailers; Costa Coffee, Thorntons, Boots, Greggs, Hallmark, HD Studio and William Hill are all trading.

Nick Gerrard, corporate director for economic growth and prosperity at Trafford Council, said: “These are really positive developments for Eden Square and Urmston generally. I am delighted that the planning for phase two is progressing so well and look forward to seeing the development taking shape throughout the coming months.”

A man has died after he was hit by a train as it passed through a station.

Police and paramedics were called to Urmston station after the driver of a train heading to Newcastle from Liverpool said he had hit a man on the line.

It happened just before 7am as commuters were heading to work in Manchester city centre. A number of train services were disrupted.

Services between Warrington Central and Manchester Oxford Road were replaced with a bus shuttle but normal service was resumed at 9.15am.

British Transport Police said the man's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “Officers attended the line close to Urmston station after a report a man had been struck by a train.

“Paramedics from Greater Manchester Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
