Iceland warms up Eden Square

Frozen food specialist, and one of Britain’s fastest-growing retailers, Iceland is moving into 7,500 sq ft premises in phase two of Eden Square development in Urmston town centre.

Iceland, recognised as one of the best companies to work for in the UK, is a brand new retailer to the Urmston area, and its introduction to Eden Square follows the recent announcements of Aldi and Quality Save as tenants.

Phase two of Eden Square is now 85% pre-let and this latest letting leaves just 3,000 sq ft of space available in phase two of the development. Ask is currently concluding detailed discussions with the main contractor for a start date on site.

Leon Guyett, development director at Ask Developments, said: “It is great to be able to finally announce the arrival of Iceland. We have been in dialogue with Iceland for some time and have worked together to adapt the plans in order to accommodate the supermarket into the scheme. Iceland is a fantastic addition both to Eden Square and to the wider shopping offer in Urmston.”

The significant progress made on phase two of the multi-million pound development, being undertaken by Ask Developments in partnership with Trafford Council, has also encouraged renewed interest in phase one.

Pirates and princesses buoy the start of summer in Eden Square

Urmston’s Eden Square summer activities for children start on Saturday 11th June, 2011, with a pirates and princesses-themed treasure hunt.

Suitable for all ages, children are invited to find the clues hidden throughout Eden Square to lead them to the pirates’ hidden treasure chest.

The event is free and will take place between 11am and 4pm.

There will be activities for children in Eden Square every second and fourth Saturday throughout the whole summer. Each month will focus on a different theme and children are encouraged to dress up, with June being pirate and princess-themed, July looking at animal antics and in August the square will ‘go-green’ and take a look at what goes on in the garden.

Leon Guyett, senior development executive at Ask, the developers behind Eden Square, said: “With the summer on our doorstep, finding something different for the kids to do at weekends is not always easy. Following the success of last year’s programme we’ve again put together a great line-up of exciting and engaging events at Eden Square that both the kids and their parents will love and we’re expecting a big turn-out.

“To coincide with the newly released Pirates of the Caribbean movie, we are kicking off this weekend with a pirates and princesses treasure hunt which gives kids a chance to dress up and get out exploring in the fresh air. It’s a free event and parents will get the chance to sit back and relax with a coffee while their children exhaust themselves looking for treasure!”

Quality Save to join line-up at Eden Square

Retailer to take space alongside Aldi in phase two of the development.

Discount store Quality Save are the latest in a growing line of retailers to commit to Eden Square in Urmston, taking a 10,000 sq ft premises in phase two of the development.

Quality Save has had a presence in Urmston for 30 years and has developed a loyal customer base within the town. The store was historically located in the original precinct and moved to a temporary location on Station Road, occupying the former Woolworths unit, while the redevelopment of the shopping centre took place.

The agreement with Quality Save, along with national supermarket chain Aldi, leaves 12,000 sq ft left within phase two. Developers Ask Developments are currently in advanced stages of negotiations with a national retailer for a third unit comprising 7,500 sq ft and hope to make an announcement shortly.

In Phase one, National charity Shaw Trust, which supports its work with disabled and disadvantaged people to find jobs and live more independently by operating retail shops, has now exchanged contracts on a 1,300 sq ft unit.

Ask appoints Countrywide

Ask Developments has appointed Countrywide Land and New Homes to market the new apartments in phase two of Eden Square in Urmston town centre.

Bridgfords, on Crofts Bank Road in Urmston, is part of the Countrywide group and will be responsible for all residential enquiries.

In total, the scheme will deliver 76 one and two bedroom apartments in the heart of Urmston's new retail quarter.

The first phase of 64 apartments was completed late 2009 and there are six apartments remaining for sale.

The 10 two-bedroom apartments in phase two are now available for sale, with one apartment already exchanged. Prices start from £135,000.

The multi-million pound regeneration of Urmston town centre is being undertaken by Ask Developments in partnership with Trafford Council to deliver Eden Square as a thriving retail and residential centre in the heart of the local community and to spearhead further regeneration in the town.

Work is expected to commence on phase two of the residential scheme late summer 2011.

Sian Pitt, head of sales at Ask Developments, said: “The apartments in phase one of Eden Square have proved extremely popular and a fantastic opportunity to get a foot on the property ladder.

Eden Square welcomes new tenant Aldi confirmed as phase two anchor retailer.

National premium discount supermarket Aldi is taking 16,000 sq ft premises in phase two of Eden Square development in Urmston town centre. Work on site is expected to commence in summer.

The announcement follows Trafford Council’s approval of the revised phase two plans in October 2010, which provides three larger units aimed at retailers who could not be accommodated in phase one.

Man killed hit by train at Urmston railway station

A man has died after he was hit by a train as it passed through a station.

Police and paramedics were called to Urmston station after the driver of a train heading to Newcastle from Liverpool said he had hit a man on the line.

It happened just before 7am as commuters were heading to work in Manchester city centre. A number of train services were disrupted.

Services between Warrington Central and Manchester Oxford Road were replaced with a bus shuttle but normal service was resumed at 9.15am.

British Transport Police said the man's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “Officers attended the line close to Urmston station after a report a man had been struck by a train.

“Paramedics from Greater Manchester Ambulance Service also attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Time to call a halt on Davyhulme incinerator

“The time has come for Peel Energy to cut its losses and scrap plans for a controversial biomass burning power plant in Davyhulme, Manchester” says Peter Kilvert, Chairman of the Breathe Clean Air Group in an email to Jonathan England of Peel Energy.

The Breathe Clean Air Group, a small group of residents in Davyhulme and Urmston, have taken the unusual step of undertaking an ambient air quality assessment in their neighbourhood, at their own expense.

Their report, which was submitted to Trafford Council’s Planning Department, as part of the huge number of objections to the Barton Renewable Energy Plant, shows significantly high levels of pollution already in Davyhulme. Oxides of nitrogen were found to be nearly twice the limit; all the heavy metals tested for were detected, with arsenic close to the limit; Particulate Matter showed huge percentages; and 1,3 butadiene, which is commonly linked to motor car exhausts, was 38 times the maximum allowed.

“These figures are alarming” said Peter Kilvert, “and I’m concerned that there does not appear to be any air monitoring carried out in Trafford. There’s also been plenty of talk about nitrogen oxides and fine particulates in the press recently, which justifies our worries about air pollution that would be caused by the proposed, Davyhulme incinerator.”

A report in the Scottish newspaper the Courier, says Tayside NHS has raised serious concerns about a proposed biomass plant for Dundee Docks. It says “there is a potential for negative effects on human health” and adds “NHS Tayside notes with concern that the siting of this facility is within an area where there are existing air quality issues that has been declared and Air Quality Management area for nitrogen dioxide, and will soon be for particulates”.

Particulates were highlighted in the ENDS report (Environmental Intelligence for Professionals) of 11th January 2011. Its headline ran “Fine particulates may have hastened a third of deaths”. It says that chronic exposure to particulate air pollution in the UK led to a loss of 340,000 years of life in 2008. The Particulate Matter may have hastened the deaths of up to 200,000 people, although most of them would have had an underlying medical condition such as heart disease.

The Scotsman (2nd Feb 2011) refers to a proposed biomass energy plant in Leith. Councillor Jenny Dawe said that the Council had received “strong advice” about the effect burning biomass could have on air quality. She said, “clearly, the impact of this plant in terms of fumes it produces is going to have to be looked at very closely. We decided against biomass boilers in schools after significant health and safety concerns were raised. We had very strong advice and there may be a danger from having biomass boilers in air quality hot-spots, where there are a large numbers of people living or a lot of traffic”.

Apart from health considerations, there is also uncertainty about the sustainability of biomass burning ventures. The “Press and Journal” refers to Peel Energy’s proposed plant in Lochaber, with its headline “Doubts cast on Scotland’s ability to fuel biomass”. The Forestry Commission has said that it might not be able to meet the demand of the new Lochaber biomass plant. Rebecca Carr, the Commission’s renewables and sustainable development adviser said “the gap between what is available and what is getting used is getting smaller. We have no capacity to enter into any new long-term contracts”.

“Landscape impact” has hit the headlines also. A proposed 50MW biomass, power station at Kings Dock, Coed Bach, Kidwelly, Wales has lost its appeal on the grounds of landscape impact, visual impact and Planning policy conflict.

“So it’s obvious” added Mr Kilvert, chairman of the Breathe Clean Air Group, “that the future of biomass burning plants is in doubt. “We are sure that the proposed plant at Davyhulme is the wrong type of plant in the wrong location. It’s too close to houses, shops, sports facilities, schools and the M60 motorway. We believe that Peel Energy should call a halt on this development now”.

Lunch club continues to support the local community

It was just over three years ago that a group of volunteers from St Michael’s Church in Flixton formed a ‘Luncheon Club’. The club which meets every Tuesday opens its doors for up to fifteen elderly and, or
isolated members of the community who live in the parish area.

The club works on a non profit basis and its service is still based on volunteered assistance. Guests pay a minimal charge towards the cost of lunch which is provided, as well as transportation to and from the venue.

On arrival, the guests enjoy a welcome drink, followed by a wholesome two course meal followed
by copious amounts of tea or coffee, and of course, guests make new friends and have stimulating
conversation.

Legislation dictates that each volunteer of the organisation have to hold a current ‘Food Hygiene’ certificate which requires renewal every 3 years. An application on behalf of the club was made to The West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity for £1,122 by one of its volunteers, David Hamilton-Hall, this being the amount required to enable all new training and refresher update course requirements to be carried out to meet the legislation and to enable volunteers at the club to be qualified for the next 3 year period and continue to offer this excellent service to the community.

The Reverend Dr Victoria Johnson of St Michael’s Church was delighted to receive a cheque from WLFC for the amount required which was presented by Jon Clipsham (Assistant Provincial Grand Master).

Teenager sexually assaulted in Urmston

A TEENAGER has been physically and sexually assaulted in Urmston.

The 18 year-old was attacked at 8.30am on Friday February 4 as she was walking alone along an alleyway between Church Road and Flixton Road.

She was approached from behind by a man, who pushed her against a fence before subjecting her to a vicious physical and sexual assault.

It is believed that the victim’s screams forced the man to run off towards Church Road.

He is described as white, in his late 40s, about 5ft 7ins tall and of medium build. He was wearing a dark coloured hat and coat.

Detective Inspector Jane Curran said: "This was an unprovoked attack on a local young woman that has understandably left the victim and her family deeply upset. “Neighbourhood and specialist officers have been working closely with the victim, local schools, residents and councillors as part of a thorough investigation to identify the person responsible for this attack.

"I would appeal to anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency. Your call will be treated with the strictest of confidence.

"I would urge people to be aware of their surroundings, avoid short cuts and not walk alone where possible.

Urmston's Dorothy gets rave reviews after first show

URMSTON’S Dorothy received a standing ovation after performing The Wizard of Oz to the public for the first time at the London Palladium on Monday.

Danielle Hope, 18, a former Highfield Primary pupil, won the coveted role of Dorothy in the BBC1 show Over the Rainbow in May.

Since then, she has been busy rehearsing for the role in Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s latest production and on February 7 performed the first preview to a packed audience at the London Palladium.

Helen Mayne, Danielle’s former teacher at Knutsford High School, was at the first show and said it had been ‘spectacular’.

“There was a standing ovation at the end of the performance and when Danielle came on stage pretty much the whole auditorium was on its feet.

“She also got a very loud cheer and round of applause when she first came on stage.

“I’m so incredibly proud of everything that she has achieved, it is testament to the person that she is - a very special performer.

“Danielle is really enjoying herself and looking forward to welcoming a new audience every night and taking them to Oz,” she said.

One person who can’t wait to see the show is Danielle’s proud Nana, Ann Radley, who has preview tickets for a show on February 17 along with her husband Peter, Danielle’s younger brother David and her great Aunt and Uncle.

“I’m very excited, I just can’t wait to see Danielle up there on the stage and see how this play has evolved.

“She has been working 15 hour days doing rehearsals and absolutely loving it,” Ann said, adding that Danielle came back to Urmston when she could to ‘keep her feet on the ground’.

Ann also has tickets to see Danielle perform in March, when she alongside family and friends will pack three coaches to travel down to London.

MILE ROAD FLOODS

A ROAD notorious for flooding had to be closed on Sunday after a deluge of rain saw it swamped with two foot of water.

A number of vehicles that had attempted to cross the B5158 Flixton Road - known locally as the Mile Road - became stuck, with one man requiring help from the fire brigade.

Life jacket clad firecrews waded through two foot of water to rescue stranded motorist at around 8.30am yesterday on the road linking Flixton with Carrington.

Fire crews from Stretford, Sale and the water rescue unit from Eccles were called and carried the man to safety.

PEEL Energy has urged its staff to write to councillors and council planning officers in support of their controversial application for a biomass incinerator in Davyhulme.

A round-robin memo was sent out by the company to staff last Tuesday by the company’s chairman, John Whittaker, asking Peel’s workforce for ‘assistance’ in gaining support for the project.

The e-mail goes on to explain how staff can tailor a ‘bespoke letter, quickly and easily’, using a specially developed website letter writing tool.

While the Breathe Clean Air protest group has accused Peel, which employs 5,000 people, of resorting to ‘desperate’ tactics to drum up support for their application, management have defended the move.

“It’s perfectly normal for any company to ask their employees to offer support for proposed new schemes,” said Peel Energy project director Jon England. “As valued stakeholders, we think it is important that employees should have the opportunity to back Peel’s plans.”

Last week Messenger revealed how 1,461 people had written to the council in opposition to Peel’s plans, with a further 4,600 signature petition against. By comparison Peel had 64 letters of support as of last week.

A spokesman for BCAG told Messenger: “The local community have made a huge effort to stand together and voice their opinion. Peel should respect this, rather than resorting to desperate measures to boost their figures.

“The fact that they feel this action is necessary highlights the lack of genuine local support for this polluting plant.”

Urmston Police sergeant charged.

A POLICE sergeant from Urmston has been charged with rape.

Peter Jee, 36, who lives in Urmston, appeared at Salford Magistrates’ Court on January 27 charged with rape and misconduct in public office.

The charges relate to the alleged rape of a woman at a house in Rochdale in August 2010.

Sergeant Jee resigned from his Rochdale-based post with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) on January 14. He had previously been suspended from duty.

GMP’s Professional Standards Branch had investigated the case, managed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Jee was bailed and is next due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street on February 17.

Two men arrested over murder in Urmston

Two men have been arrested and are being questioned over a suspicious murder which occurred on Stretford Road, Urmston yesterday at about 17:00.

Police were called to Stretford Road, Urmston to a report that a 30-year-old man had sustained a serious injury. When officers from Greater Manchester Police arrived they found he had died at the scene. A police spokesman said two men, aged 27 and 31, had been arrested relating to the incident and were currently in custody waiting to be questioned.

The victim has not yet been identified and a post mortem is due to take place tomorrow.

Post-mortem results revealed

A post-mortem examination has revealed that Mr Kesmez, a father-of-two from Lytham Road, Urmston who passed away outside the Simpson Foods factory on Stretford Road, Urmston, died from a neck injury.

His wife, Samantha in a statement said: "Words cannot describe what we are all going through. He was just the best. "He was a father (baba) to a son aged eight and a daughter aged six. "He was also a much-loved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend to lots."

Hishyar Baper, 31 from Moss Lane, Urmston has been charged and is due to appear before Trafford magistrates.

Using stories ,rhymes and songs the children will develop their first mathematical skills such as counting, number and shape recognition together with early addition and subtraction.These fun sessions are open to all under-5's and are free.

End of the road for the Red Lion, Flixton.

The Red Lion public house on Irlam Road in Flixton today became the latest casualty of the credit crunch when the demolition team moved in and started to remove sections of the former watering hole.

The bid to turn Flixton pub into an old folk’s home is certainly one step closer after the council planners issued the green light to a project for a care home. Hundreds march against the incinerator!

Placard-waving protestors lead a spirited march through Davyhulme and Urmston in protest of the Barton Renewable Energy Plant.

Davyhulme power plant causes uproar within local community.

Peel Energy Ltd is expected to submit its proposals on Thursday for the renewable
energy plant due to be built on land off Barton Bridge in Urmston.

Hundreds of local protesters have met to voice concerns over the planned power
plant. Almost 600 people attended a public meeting held by the Breathe Clean Air
Group in response to Peel Energy Ltd’s plan for land in Davyhulme.

Jo Burgess, spokeswoman for the campaign, told the audience gathered at the
Christ Church, Lostock: “If there is ever a time to be standing up and being counted in your life, it's now" These strong words from Jo Burgess have generated a healthy response from the local community and this coming Saturday, Trafford councilors and residents will carry out a protest march through the below streets of Urmston. This march is expected to generate a healthy turnout which will hopefully convey the message to Trafford council.

The route will start at Broadway Park at 10.30am where protestors will march into Urmston town centre and then on to Davyhulme Park. Protestors have been advised to “bring your whistles and loudest voices because we intend to be seen and heard!” The march will end with speeches from the MP; Kate Green, several councillors and other guest speakers.

Action to date

On Friday 31st December, the Breathe Clean Air Group organised a Flashmob Freeze in Urmton town centre. Over 60 people subtly congregated in Eden Square at 1pm and, on the sound of a whistle, froze still for 5 minutes. Participants wore something red and brought along red props to show their support. We were thrilled to see so many supporters out on New Year’s Eve. It was a truly memorable event for all of those who took part and for those who watched the event. It was a fantastic and unusual way to end 2010. People were talking about it afterwards and we have had incredible feedback! Action of this nature really does indicate the thoughts of the local community.
